Arezzo and Cortona, jewels in the Tuscan crown

Cortona, a small town in the province of Arezzo, is often ignored because it is small and hard to reach, but this little town is rich in history, far more so than many more famous destinations. An ancient Etruscan outpost, Cortona still maintains its medieval appearance. Its old walls could still protect it from attacks from the valley below and the little streets, never cemented, maintain their classic cobblestone paving. After a pleasant morning viewing the medieval remains and enjoying local cuisine, TAOLS guides will accompany you to Arezzo, the capital of Tuscan gold and where the mythic Roberto Benigni filmed “Life is Beautiful”.  Although it was subjected to a great deal of damage due to bombing during World War II, the city still boasts a wealth of monuments, like the church of San Francesco, with its stunning Renaissance fresco by Piero della Francesca.
