This small city owes its fame to two factors: its university system, one of the oldest and most prestigious in Italy, and its Leaning Tower. Oddly enough, the two are completely incompatible: according to legend, for every step of the tower a student climbs before receiving his or her degree, an extra year will be added to the unfortunate student’s university career. Tourists, however, intrigued by the tower, flock to it in great numbers in order to take a classic photo while ‘holding up’ the tower or to see the enormous lead counterweights hanging from it to prevent its fall.
